The United Arab Emirates has formally signed the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel during a high-level event in New York ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
The move underscores the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding humanitarian workers and ensuring aid reaches those in need without obstruction.
Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, and Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development Affairs and International Organisations, represented the UAE in the signing. They emphasized the nation’s dedication to upholding international humanitarian law and protecting personnel operating in conflict zones.
The Declaration, driven by a cross-regional coalition of states, seeks to convert pledges into actionable measures, enhancing the safety and security of humanitarian staff in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2730 (2024).
“The UAE is proud to join this global effort to protect humanitarian personnel across conflicts around the world,”
Al Hashimy said.
“Humanitarian action is not only a moral commitment but a foundation for sustainable peace. We will continue collaborating with partners to strengthen adherence to international humanitarian law, expand the immediate and safe delivery of aid, and ensure accountability for attacks on workers in this field.”
To support these efforts, the UAE will actively participate in the newly formed Group of Friends for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel in Geneva. This platform will bring together committed states to enhance coordination, share best practices, and uphold international humanitarian law worldwide.
Through this initiative, the UAE positions itself at the forefront of global humanitarian advocacy, demonstrating a clear commitment to protecting aid workers and reinforcing the importance of safe and effective humanitarian action.
