UAE Strengthens Commitment to Gender Equality with $15 Million Partnership with UN Women
The UAE has further solidified its commitment to global gender equality and women’s empowerment through a strategic partnership with UN Women, announced in March 2024.
This collaboration, backed by a US$15 million investment over the next 3.5 years, will focus on advancing women's status worldwide and supporting the UN Women Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
This partnership underscores the UAE’s leadership in gender balance, as it ranked first in the Arab region for closing the gender gap and topped the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index. The agreement is part of the UAE's ongoing efforts to promote women’s representation in diplomacy and enhance women-focused foreign policies globally.
The Strategic Partnership Framework (SPF) aims to accelerate women’s economic empowerment, particularly in Africa and Latin America, and amplify women’s roles in climate action. It also reinforces the UAE's commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, focusing on women’s participation in peacebuilding and the global women, peace, and security agenda.
Noura Al Suwaidi, Secretary General of the General Women’s Union, emphasized the importance of the partnership, citing the UAE’s dedication to supporting women’s integration into foreign policy and enhancing their participation in security and peacekeeping operations.
Dr. Mouza Al Shehhi, Director of the UN Women Liaison Office for the GCC, praised the UAE's instrumental role in advancing regional and international cooperation for women’s empowerment, reflecting the country’s global leadership in gender equality.
With this partnership, the UAE continues to champion women’s empowerment, striving to overcome barriers to gender equality and setting a global example for change.
