The UAE is advancing its commitment to healthy ageing with a three-day specialised training programme for healthcare professionals in Dubai, organised by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The initiative equips doctors and specialists with tools to implement the integrated care for older people (ICOPE) approach, enhancing independence and quality of life for the nation’s elderly.

The programme forms part of the UAE’s National Framework for Healthy Ageing 2025–2031 and included sessions on international best practices, practical case simulations, and methods to integrate health and social care services. Participants received hands-on training in assessing mobility, cognitive, and sensory capacities using ICOPE tools and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB).

Sessions addressed common challenges in older age, including cognitive decline, depression, nutrition, mobility, and sensory impairments. Experts discussed strategies to design personalised care plans and explored integrated care pathways to strengthen support systems for older citizens.

The event also highlighted the UAE’s efforts to empower healthcare and social workforces, upgrading caregiver skills and reinforcing collaboration across health and social sectors. It aligns with global initiatives such as the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021–2030, which encourages joint action to promote healthy lives for older adults.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector at MoHAP, said the programme reflects a comprehensive national strategy to prioritise elderly health.

“Investing in the health of older people is both a humanitarian and national responsibility. This initiative strengthens social cohesion, ensures dignity and independence for older citizens, and positions the UAE as a global model for healthy ageing,”

he said.

The training marks a strategic step in advancing preventive and therapeutic services, demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to holistic, people-centred care for its ageing population.
