The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has ramped up efforts to combat childhood obesity through a series of strategic initiatives launched in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) throughout 2024.
As part of the National Programme to Combat Obesity, MoHAP signed a landmark agreement with Novo Nordisk Pharma Gulf to develop a national scientific guide for obesity management and weight control. The ministry also conducted training workshops to enhance staff competencies and standardize protocols for early detection of obesity indicators.
Health authorities have continued to implement nationwide programmes that encourage physical activity from an early age, support balanced nutrition in schools, and ensure comprehensive prenatal and maternal care. These initiatives align with the UAE’s broader health strategy to promote long-term well-being and raise awareness about obesity’s societal impact.
In partnership with the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, MoHAP hosted two specialised workshops: “Health-Promoting Schools” and “Essentials of Effective Health Communication for Managing Childhood Obesity.” Both fall under the “Comprehensive School Health” project, designed to integrate health education into school environments.
Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Public Health Sector, emphasised that tackling obesity, particularly among children, is a top priority.
“We aim to create a society where healthy living is second nature, through collaboration between individuals, policymakers, private institutions, and educators,”
he stated.
Looking ahead, MoHAP will continue rolling out public awareness campaigns and community initiatives, with the upcoming National Health and Nutrition Survey set to provide critical data on obesity rates. These insights will help shape future health policies, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to building a healthier future.
