The UAE marked the International Day of Older Persons on October 1 by reaffirming its commitment to ensuring a dignified life for senior citizens through comprehensive care systems, advanced services, and community-driven initiatives.
The Family Development Foundation (FDF), in partnership with the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi, highlighted its ongoing efforts through programmes such as Barakat Al Dar social clubs. These centres provide medical check-ups, nutritional counselling, sports sessions, and social activities designed to improve physical and mental well-being while fostering community engagement.
Complementing this, the Barakatna initiative enhances essential home care services, helping families maintain a stable environment for senior citizens while reducing daily burdens. The initiative also strengthens family ties, enabling households to balance personal and professional responsibilities.
Wafa Al Ali, Director of the Family Development Department at FDF, said the foundation aims to provide senior citizens with an environment that reflects their status and enriches their quality of life. She noted that this year’s Senior Citizens Forum offered a platform for dialogue on key topics, including digital transformation of services, while unveiling new initiatives such as the Barakatna Clinic.
The Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an also continues to expand opportunities for senior citizens through programmes like Journey of Generations, which promotes intergenerational connection and active lifestyles. Community-based projects, including football activities, further encourage healthy living and strengthen seniors’ role in society.
By combining government support with community initiatives, the UAE continues to enhance the quality of life for its senior citizens, celebrating them as role models and pillars of social cohesion.
