Japan imported 32.48 million barrels of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates in March 2025, making the UAE its largest oil supplier that month and accounting for 41.4 percent of Japan’s total oil imports.
According to data released by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan’s overall crude oil imports for March totaled 78.39 million barrels. Of this, 96.9 percent—roughly 75.93 million barrels—were sourced from Arab nations, underscoring the region’s strategic role in meeting Japan’s energy needs.
Saudi Arabia followed closely behind the UAE, supplying 30.93 million barrels, or 38.4 percent of the total imports. Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman contributed 6.7 percent, 5.0 percent, and 3.2 percent, respectively.
Outside the Arab world, Japan sourced a small fraction of its oil from the United States (1.8 percent), Ecuador (0.8 percent), Oceania (0.3 percent), and Southeast Asia (0.2 percent), reflecting limited diversification in its energy supply chain.
The figures highlight Japan’s continued reliance on Middle Eastern crude, reinforcing the significance of regional ties and energy diplomacy in securing long-term supply stability.
