Japan imported 25.8 million barrels of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates in February 2025, accounting for 38.4% of its total oil imports for the month, according to data released by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Overall, Japan imported 67.3 million barrels of oil in February, with Arab oil producers supplying the vast majority—97.3%, or approximately 65.48 million barrels. The figures highlight the continuing strategic importance of the Middle East, particularly the UAE, in meeting Japan’s energy needs.

The UAE maintained its position as a key supplier, reinforcing longstanding energy ties between the two nations. The data also underscores Japan’s heavy reliance on Arab oil, a trend that persists amid global efforts to diversify energy sources and transition to renewables.

Japan, which lacks significant domestic energy resources, continues to depend on stable oil flows from the Middle East to ensure its energy security. The high share of imports from Arab nations in February illustrates both the depth of regional partnerships and the current limitations in diversifying supply sources.

As geopolitical and market dynamics evolve, Japan’s energy strategy remains closely linked to developments in the Gulf region, particularly its relationships with major exporters like the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
