Employers in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah will be required to purchase new health insurance policies for their employees starting January 1, 2025.
This mandate, announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) on Monday, stipulates that the policy is a prerequisite for issuing or renewing residency permits.
The new health insurance scheme, which begins in 2025, is designed to enhance the UAE’s labor market by offering comprehensive coverage to all workers, including domestic workers. While the policy does not apply to employees with valid work permits issued before January 1, 2024, it will be mandatory when their residency permits are due for renewal.
The basic insurance plan starts at a competitive price of Dh320 per year, offering coverage for treatment, inpatient care, and outpatient visits. It also covers individuals aged 1 to 64, with no waiting period for those with chronic conditions. The package includes a 20% co-payment for inpatient care, and a 25% co-payment for outpatient care, with a cap on co-pays for medication and visits.
Khalil Al Khoori, undersecretary at MoHRE, stated that the initiative aligns with the UAE’s vision to provide secure and healthy work environments and improve workers' quality of life. Additionally, the policy is expected to reduce financial burdens on employers and improve healthcare accessibility for all workers.
Major General Saeed Salem Balhas Al Shamsi of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship emphasized that this policy will complete the UAE's health insurance framework and contribute to the nation's global competitiveness, particularly in labor market performance.
