The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) will introduce mandatory genetic testing as part of the premarital screening programme for Emiratis beginning January 2025. This initiative, approved by the Emirates Genome Council, aims to safeguard the health of future generations and enhance the overall quality of life for Emirati families.
The programme, aligned with the National Genome Strategy, will identify genetic risks associated with over 840 medical conditions through tests covering 570 genes. It enables couples to make informed decisions about their future children and prevents genetic diseases.
MoHAP has developed the necessary medical infrastructure, expertise, and guidelines in partnership with key health authorities and academic institutions. This initiative positions the UAE as a global leader in genetic disease prevention and aligns with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071 for sustainable development and improved healthcare standards.
