Starting September 1, 2024, a new rule will limit the amount of liquid passengers can carry in their hand luggage on flights from the UAE to Schengen countries.
The European Council announced that the maximum allowable liquid per container will be reduced to 100ml, as a temporary measure to address technical issues with Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) in certain EU airports. This rule is a precautionary step and not a response to any new security threat.
While most airports globally already impose a 100ml limit on liquids in carry-on baggage, this restriction will now be uniformly enforced at EU airports with EDSCB equipment, reverting to the standard 100ml maximum per container. The total amount of liquid each passenger can carry remains at two liters.
This change will affect travelers at EU airports, including Helsinki Airport, where Finland’s national carrier, Finnair, has already confirmed the new rules. Transfer passengers at Helsinki Airport, however, will not be affected by this change.
The European Commission is working with member states and the European Civil Aviation Conference to find quick technical solutions to ensure safe and secure air travel. The decision underscores the ongoing commitment of EU authorities to maintaining the highest security standards while minimizing disruptions for passengers.
