The UAE announced an ambitious polar research project during the UAE Government’s Annual Meetings 2024, signaling the nation’s commitment to advancing its influence in global polar research.
Spearheaded by Mariam Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office at the Presidential Court and Chair of the UAE Polar Mission Steering Committee, the project aims to position the UAE among leading polar research nations.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with the International Affairs Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, National Centre of Meteorology, and Khalifa University, is set to establish the “Polar Research Center” at Khalifa University. The project will foster strategic international partnerships, support treaty signings, and promote UAE participation in international polar missions.
Almheiri emphasized the UAE’s dedication to addressing climate change, highlighting the polar regions’ critical role in global climate systems.
“Two Emiratis embark on their Antarctic mission tomorrow, November 7th, and another is planned for the Arctic in summer 2025,”
she announced, marking the UAE’s commitment to both poles.
Through this mission, the UAE aims to inspire the next generation of Emirati scientists, build national research capacity, and contribute meaningfully to global climate solutions. The UAE has also received Cabinet approval for key polar research treaties, and it has been invited to participate in prominent polar programs, including the Antarctica InSync initiative and Bulgaria’s Antarctic expedition.
This strategic project reflects the UAE’s vision for soft power and its focus on advancing environmental causes, underscoring its commitment to scientific excellence and international collaboration in polar research.
