Abu Dhabi's Judicial Court has issued a social media reminder detailing penalties for the misuse of prescription narcotics and psychotropic substances.

Under amendments to Article 30 of UAE law, first-time offenders now face rehabilitation alongside penalties.

Penalties escalate with repeated offences. First-time offenders may face up to three months in prison and fines ranging from Dh20,000 to Dh100,000. Repeat offenders could see prison terms of six months or more, with fines similarly adjusted. For a third offence, penalties increase further, with fines potentially exceeding Dh100,000 and a minimum one-year prison term.

These regulations, outlined in Federal Decree Law No. (30) of 2021, reflect the UAE's firm stance on combating drug abuse while emphasizing rehabilitation for first-time offenders.
