The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced the conclusion of the 2024 Midday Break, a regulation banning work in direct sunlight from 12:30 to 3:00 pm.
The ban, effective from June 15 to September 15, is part of MoHRE's ongoing efforts to ensure occupational safety and protect workers from heat stress during the UAE's hottest months.
The initiative saw remarkable compliance, with 99.9% of companies adhering to the regulation. Additionally, around 6,000 rest stations were provided across the country to accommodate delivery service workers during the break hours.
Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs, Mohsin Al Nassi, praised the private sector’s role in enforcing the ban, stating that companies not only followed the regulations but also launched their own initiatives to safeguard workers. He emphasized that these measures contributed to improving employee productivity and enhancing the UAE’s labour market competitiveness.
The Ministry conducted 134,000 inspection visits, uncovering just 51 violations, further highlighting the high level of compliance. Al Nassi described the Midday Break as a "main pillar of UAE labour legislation," noting its success in raising awareness among companies and communities about the importance of worker welfare.
In collaboration with government and private sector partners, MoHRE also implemented initiatives to promote worker wellbeing, including the provision of shaded areas, cooling equipment, and hydration supplements. Community members actively supported the initiative by reporting violations and offering suggestions through the Ministry’s online platforms.
As the initiative concludes its 20th year, it remains a critical component of the UAE’s efforts to ensure safe working environments and protect labourers from extreme heat.
