Travellers seeking to renew their B1 or B2 US visas must now adhere to a reduced eligibility window for interview waivers. Effective February 18, 2025, the US Department of State has shortened the interview waiver period from 48 months to 12 months, meaning only applicants whose visas expired within the past year will be eligible.

Key Changes to the US Visa Renewal Process

  • Shorter Renewal Window: The previous four-year eligibility for an interview waiver has been reduced to one year.
  • Application Requirements: Renewals must be submitted from the applicant’s home country or country of residence, with no prior visa refusals (unless waived) and no ineligibility concerns.
  • Discretionary Interviews: Consular officers retain the right to require in-person interviews based on individual applications.
  • Diplomatic & Official Exemptions: Certain visa holders remain exempt from this rule change.

Industry Experts Urge Travellers to Act Quickly

Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism, explained that during the post-COVID period, visa renewals could be done by post within a 48-month window. With the new policy, travellers must apply sooner to avoid delays.

"Many of our clients previously had four years to renew, leading to delays. With only one year now, it is crucial to act quickly,"

said Libin Varghese, sales director at Rooh Tourism and Travel.

Appointment Delays & Planning Ahead

Visa interview slots are facing significant delays, further stressing the importance of early renewal applications.

  • In Abu Dhabi, the earliest available visa interview appointment is currently July next year.
  • Visas that expired before February 18, 2024, are not eligible for a waiver.

What Applicants Should Do Now

  • Check the US embassy and consulate websites for appointment availability.
  • Apply before expiration to ensure eligibility for a waiver.
  • Be prepared for longer wait times if an interview is required.

The new policy reinforces the importance of proactive visa renewals, with limited flexibility and longer processing times, making early applications essential for frequent travellers.
