Waste to Zero Initiative Unveils Transformative White Paper on Waste Decarbonisation at COP29

At COP29 in Azerbaijan, the Waste to Zero initiative launched its inaugural white paper, spotlighting waste management's pivotal role in global decarbonisation.

Jointly developed by partners such as the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Tadweer Group, and Roland Berger, the white paper underscores waste's untapped potential in achieving net zero emissions.

The report highlights the waste sector’s substantial emissions impact, with methane from mismanaged organic waste contributing 20% of global methane emissions. Through advanced technologies like waste-to-hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel, the report emphasizes that waste can serve as a scalable, cost-effective solution for decarbonisation.

Ali Al Dhaheri, CEO of Tadweer Group, remarked,

“Our findings underscore waste’s potential as a transformative asset in climate action, and Waste to Zero offers a scalable path to reduce emissions and achieve net zero. We look forward to ongoing collaborations to meet the 2050 targets.”

Alya Al Harmoodi, Assistant Under-Secretary at the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, added,

“Waste to Zero’s achievements highlight the urgent need for consolidated action. We are committed to working with partners to support the UAE’s shift toward a circular economy.”

The white paper, backed by over 50 global institutions, advocates for data-driven, collaborative approaches to address the waste sector's emissions. Key insights include the necessity of managing urban waste growth and leveraging AI to enhance waste reduction, signaling waste management’s critical role in sustainable development.
