At COP29, the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced a landmark partnership to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon global economy. His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Ahmed Al Tayer, Chairman of WGEO, and Abdallah Al Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at UNDP, signed the agreement to strengthen efforts in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The partnership focuses on helping countries implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement by emphasizing key areas such as carbon markets, climate adaptation and mitigation, integrated land and water management, and transparency. The collaboration aims to enhance climate resilience and sustainable development worldwide, addressing both environmental and economic challenges.

HE Saeed Al Tayer highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting its role in supporting global climate action and promoting a green economy that benefits people and the planet. Abdallah Al Dardari emphasized the shared commitment to fostering low-carbon development, strengthening institutional and human capacities, and creating bankable projects that address climate challenges while driving economic growth.

Initial efforts will focus on identifying countries with significant potential for green economy transformation, prioritizing local engagement, climate action awareness, and the development of green projects capable of attracting public and private investment. A joint Steering Committee will oversee these initiatives, ensuring impactful and scalable solutions tailored to each country’s unique needs.

WGEO and UNDP also plan to co-host events, conduct research, and launch educational programs to promote green economy initiatives. Through these activities, they aim to inspire governments, businesses, and communities to invest in sustainable development and adopt climate-friendly practices.

This strategic collaboration underscores the necessity of coordinated global efforts to tackle climate change, build resilient economies, and ensure sustainable growth for future generations.
