With iOS 18, Apple has introduced several new features to its Maps app, enhancing the user experience with a focus on outdoor activities and customization. While the update doesn't include any AI-driven features, it offers practical improvements for everyday use.

Hiking Trails:
iOS 18 brings detailed topographic maps to the iPhone, including comprehensive trail networks across all 63 U.S. national parks. Users can search for hikes or hiking routes, filter by length, route type, and elevation, and save them for offline access. The app provides detailed information about each trail, such as length, highest and lowest points, and a full overview of the trail's path.

Custom Routes:
The Maps app now supports custom routes, allowing users to plan specific hiking routes. At a trailhead, users can create a custom route by setting points on the map, with the app providing length and elevation details. The feature ensures that routes stick to existing trails, minimizing the risk of creating unsafe paths.

Search Here:
Apple has added a "Search here" button, making it easier to search in specific locations rather than just your current physical location. The search feature updates as you pan around the map, giving users more control over where they want to explore.

Saving Favorites:
Users can save their favorite hikes, trails, or custom routes to a new Library section in the Maps app. This feature allows users to rename hikes, add notes, and download routes for offline usage.

Library:
All saved content, including locations, routes, guides, and pins, is now stored in a single Library section, making it easier to access and manage your saved items.

Notes:
Users can add private notes to any place on the map, which are stored on-device and visible only to the note creator.
