The third edition of the World Utilities Congress has kicked off, bringing together global leaders to address critical challenges in energy transitions, grid modernization, and water security.
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, this year's event is co-located with the 6th Arab Water Forum.
The congress was inaugurated with an opening ceremony attended by VIPs, dignitaries, and industry leaders. Keynote speeches were delivered by notable figures including Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Jasim Husain Thabet, CEO of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA); Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council; and Professor Loic Fauchon, President of the World Water Council.
Al Mazrouei highlighted the UAE's commitment to sustainability, stating, “We invested AED150 billion locally, with AED45 billion in renewable energy. We plan to invest another AED500 billion in the energy sector over the next 30 years to achieve our net-zero target.” He noted that renewable energy now constitutes 27.8% of the UAE's energy mix, with a goal of over 30% by 2030.
The Ministerial Panel on 'From COP28 to COP29' explored how to turn climate pledges into tangible outcomes, featuring insights from global ministers including Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Max-Kyne of Sierra Leone and Dr. William F. Duguid of Barbados.
Jasim Husain Thabet emphasized the congress's role in fostering collaboration, stating, “The World Utilities Congress is a key platform to bring together innovators and experts to address the growing demand for energy and water while reducing carbon emissions.”
The event features various panels and showcases, including a Technical Conference on innovations in clean technology and an Innovation Showcase highlighting new solutions for reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency. The congress, which runs until September 18, serves as a critical forum for advancing sustainable practices in the utilities sector.
