The Ministry of Culture has released the 2023 UAE National Reading Index, a biennial survey that assesses reading habits across the Emirati society, aligning with the nation's goal of making reading a way of life by 2026.

The index, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, included over 3,800 participants, including citizens, residents, writers, students, teachers, and parents.

Key findings reveal an increase in the average number of books read per person annually, rising from six in 2021 to seven in 2023. The use of social media as a reading platform grew to 90.4% in 2023. The index also showed a diversification in sources for obtaining reading materials, with online purchases becoming more prevalent.

Reading preferences in 2023 showed a shift towards English (51%) and a slight decline in exclusive Arabic reading. Motivations for reading were primarily enjoyment and information needs, with a notable increase in the importance of a suitable reading environment.

The index also highlighted trends in Emirati literature, with an increase in the number of books read by writers and a growing preference for Emirati literature among authors. However, there was a decline in the perception of Emirati literature as reflective of the cultural landscape. The publishing industry's role in promoting Emirati literature also saw a slight decrease.

Overall, the 2023 UAE National Reading Index underscores the evolving reading culture in the UAE, reflecting the nation’s commitment to fostering knowledge and intellectual growth.
