Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), toured the Distribution Power division’s complex in Al Ruwayyah to review projects aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of Dubai’s electricity distribution network.
During the visit, Al Tayer reviewed technologies covering artificial intelligence-powered asset management, distribution automation, accredited laboratory services, advanced inspection methods and employee training. The initiatives form part of DEWA’s efforts to strengthen its smart grid and improve operational performance.
One of the key projects showcased was the Asset Health Centre, which uses real-time information on asset condition, risks and maintenance requirements. The system supports faster decision-making, risk-based maintenance planning and better timing for asset replacements while helping reduce operational risks.
Al Tayer was also briefed on DEWA’s Distribution Automation programme. The programme uses RF-Mesh technology to enable remote monitoring and control of the electricity network through Distribution Control Centres, supporting improved network reliability.
The tour included DEWA’s accredited laboratories, including the ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited Cable Lab. The facility supports root-cause analysis, quality assurance, lifecycle management and external cable testing. Al Tayer also visited the Energy Meter Testing Lab, which conducts accredited testing of energy meters and current transformers.
Another technology highlighted during the visit was DEWA’s use of X-ray inspections for capacitor bank circuit breakers. DEWA is the first utility worldwide to use the technique to inspect these assets without damaging them or affecting their functionality. The technology helps identify internal defects early and reduce potential service interruptions.
The visit concluded with a review of DEWA’s Mobile Training Unit, which provides safety and operational training directly to field teams. The unit trained more than 9,200 employees between 2021 and 2025.
Al Tayer said DEWA’s continued investment in research, development and employee innovation is helping strengthen Dubai’s power network and improve maintenance and operational efficiency.
