dnata, a leading global air and travel services provider, has enhanced its ground support equipment fleet at Dubai International Airport (DXB) with 14 new electric ground power units (GPUs).

These 180kVA units will handle 33% of all GPU usage at the world’s busiest international airport, significantly reducing the airport’s carbon footprint by cutting fuel consumption by approximately 550,000 liters annually. The first four units have already been deployed to support Emirates Engineering, with the remaining 10 set to arrive in November.

This $4 million investment is part of dnata’s ongoing strategy to replace diesel-powered equipment with electric, hybrid, or hydrogen-powered alternatives. Jaffar Dawood, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations, emphasized that the initiative underscores dnata’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with the airport’s environmental goals and improving operational efficiency.

In addition to fleet upgrades, dnata has switched its non-electric fleet at Dubai’s airports to biodiesel and is actively collaborating with biofuel suppliers. The company’s efforts are paying off, as dnata has reported reductions in carbon intensity across its airport, travel, and catering operations, validated by independent auditor Verifavia.

dnata’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond Dubai. Globally, the company is investing in renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power, in markets such as the UK, Ireland, Pakistan, and the Philippines. In September 2023, dnata became the first air services provider to achieve IATA’s IEnvA certification, reinforcing its role as an industry leader in environmental responsibility.
