Emirates SkyCargo has flown Altair-1, the UAE's first commercial AI-enabled earth observation satellite, from Dubai to Los Angeles ahead of its scheduled October 2026 launch, marking another milestone in the country's growing space ambitions.
The satellite travelled aboard an Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 freighter from Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Altair-1 is the first of ten satellites that will eventually form the Altair constellation, a project developed and manufactured entirely in the UAE by Orbitworks.
The Altair constellation is built for multi-sensor earth observation, combining optical, infrared, thermal and RF sensing with onboard AI processing. Once fully deployed, the ten-satellite network is expected to strengthen the UAE's capabilities in space-based data collection and analysis, supporting the country's broader push to position itself as a serious player in advanced technology and space innovation.
Moving the satellite safely required specialised handling, a task that fell to Emirates SkyCargo's Aerospace and Engineering division, which manages highly sensitive and technologically complex cargo.
Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President at Emirates SkyCargo, said transporting such advanced cargo demands precision, adding that the airline's decades of experience positioned it well to support the mission.
This is not the carrier's first venture into satellite logistics. Emirates SkyCargo has previously handled the transport of Arab Satellite 813 and Khalifasat, building a track record in aerospace freight. The airline's involvement with Altair-1 adds to a strong year for its aerospace operations, having already moved more than 6,000 tonnes of aerospace and advanced engineering cargo worldwide in 2026.
With Altair-1 now on its way to launch preparations in the US, the mission represents a significant step forward for both Orbitworks' constellation ambitions and the UAE's expanding footprint in the global space sector.
