A recent survey conducted by Oliver Wyman reveals significant consumer preferences and trends in the UAE's grocery sector.
The study highlights that 92% of respondents actively seek out locally grown fruits and vegetables, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting domestic agriculture.
The survey also underscores a growing affinity for discounts among UAE consumers, with 58% expressing a preference for retailers offering cost-saving promotions. This trend, according to Oliver Wyman's Customer Perception Map (CPM), indicates a maturing market where consumers increasingly prioritize value and personalized shopping experiences.
Maryam Oribela, a Dubai resident, exemplifies this trend by strategically shopping across multiple retailers to maximize savings. She notes,
"It’s like playing ‘mix and match’ – you buy different grocery items from different retailers that offer discounts and you get more value for your money.”
Personalization emerges as another crucial factor in consumer behavior, with over 70% of respondents expressing interest in tailored offers.
Alexander Poehl of Oliver Wyman highlights that successful retailers will differentiate themselves through innovation and personalized services, catering to the diverse cultural backgrounds and preferences of UAE consumers.
The survey also indicates a strong willingness among consumers to engage with loyalty programs that offer expanded services beyond traditional retail, such as F&B and healthcare. This consumer openness presents opportunities for retailers to enhance customer loyalty through integrated service offerings.
Moreover, the emphasis on local produce not only supports food security initiatives but also boosts the UAE's agricultural sector. Currently, domestic vegetable production meets over 20% of local demand, with ongoing government efforts aimed at further enhancing agricultural sustainability.
