Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced an innovative Smart Assessment System for cycling and e-scooter tracks, utilizing cutting-edge technology to optimize road network maintenance and enhance user safety.

This global initiative is designed to support Dubai's Sustainable Mobility Vision 2030 by improving the experience for soft mobility users while prioritizing environmental and operational efficiency.

The system, part of RTA's commitment to sustainable infrastructure development, creates a digital twin of tracks, allowing for proactive assessments and predictive maintenance. Equipped with advanced cameras and sensors mounted on an electric bicycle, the system analyzes track conditions without disrupting user movement, ensuring fast and precise monitoring. It enables assessments of up to 120 km of tracks in just four hours, a 98% improvement over traditional methods.

This initiative marks a significant leap forward, incorporating global benchmarks such as the Track Pavement Condition Index, Track Asset Condition Index, and Ride Comfort Index. The system’s efficiency is evident in its ability to assess 557 km of tracks within a month, surpassing conventional methods by 92%.

In addition to enhancing safety, the system supports sustainable mobility by reducing operational costs and emergency maintenance needs, thus improving financial and environmental sustainability. RTA's initiative reinforces Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart, sustainable mobility, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly transport and contributing to the city's status as a bicycle-friendly destination.
