A recent survey on motorcycle delivery riders in the UAE highlights a strong customer-rider relationship, with many customers displaying understanding when delivery times are slightly delayed.
The survey, conducted by YouGov in December 2024 and commissioned by Al Wathba Insurance and RoadSafetyUAE, found that 80% of delivery customers are not bothered by a two-minute delay, and 64% would be fine with a five-minute delay.
Ali Mahmoud, a Business Bay resident, exemplified this attitude when his lunch delivery was five minutes late but still warm.
"It was okay,"
he said, offering a small tip and asking about traffic conditions, underscoring the considerate nature of most UAE customers.
The survey revealed that 85% of customers are satisfied with the timeliness of their deliveries, with only 15% reporting delays outside their expectations. However, the findings also have a road safety angle. According to Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, allowing extra time for deliveries could lead to safer riding behaviors, reducing pressure on riders to rush and break traffic rules.
The survey also found that 62% of customers tip their riders, and 80% are satisfied with the cleanliness of delivery boxes. However, only 58% of respondents felt delivery companies adequately support their riders. With delivery riders often under pressure to meet tight deadlines, Edelmann emphasized the need to reduce time pressure to improve both rider safety and public perception.
The survey was based on responses from 1,031 UAE residents and reveals valuable insights into the relationship between delivery customers and riders.
