The UAE has announced the extension of passport validity to 10 years for individuals aged 21 and above, effective July 8, 2024.
Previously valid for five years, Emirati passports will now allow longer intervals between renewals, reducing the bureaucratic burden on citizens.
The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship confirmed that the new service aims to streamline administrative processes and save time.
Major General Suhail Juma Al Khaili, Director General of Identity and Passports at the Authority, emphasized that the 10-year validity is tailored to simplify the renewal process, requiring citizens to make only one visit every decade, compared to the previous two visits.
"This initiative underscores our leadership's commitment to continually improving citizens' quality of life,"
remarked Fatima Al Balooshi, an Emirati resident, highlighting the ease and efficiency of her recent passport renewal experience.
Ahmed Khalifa, another Emirati, lauded the policy as reflective of the government's dedication to enhancing convenience, foreseeing significant time savings over the passport's lifespan.
The extension applies to passports nearing expiry or fully utilized pages, maintaining consistency in issuance procedures through existing channels. Domestic renewals can be processed at local passport offices managed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. For urgent renewals, dedicated 24/7 service is available at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports, with provisions also made for citizens residing abroad through UAE embassies and consulates.
The introduction of the 10-year validity period aligns with the UAE's ongoing efforts to modernize public services and optimize administrative efficiency for its citizens.
