The UAE Food Bank and the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reduce food wastage and make better use of surplus food through the ‘Dubai Weddings’ initiative.
The agreement sets out a framework for collecting and redistributing safe, surplus food to eligible beneficiaries. It supports the Dubai Social Agenda 33 by strengthening community participation, encouraging responsible consumption and advancing food security and social solidarity.
Under the deal, the two entities will coordinate the collection, receipt, transportation and redistribution of surplus food from weddings and events identified by the CDA. Donations will be managed and distributed in line with approved regulations and food safety requirements.
The MoU also provides for joint awareness campaigns, community programmes and initiatives that promote food preservation and sustainable consumption. It will support volunteer participation in relevant activities, encouraging more people to contribute to charitable work.
Dr. Ahmed Al Hashemi, CEO of the Social Regulation and Services Sector at the CDA, said the Dubai Weddings initiative supports family formation and stability, and the partnership extends its impact to the wider community. He said recovering surplus food safely creates more opportunities for giving while encouraging efficient use of resources.
Manal Obaid bin Yaroof, Head of the Executive Team of the UAE Food Bank, said the cooperation strengthens the organisation’s ability to recover surplus food and ensure it reaches those in need through safe, organised processes. She said it also supports the Food Bank’s wider humanitarian mission and its work with other government entities.
The agreement forms part of the CDA’s ongoing efforts to enhance Dubai Weddings and reflects the Food Bank’s commitment to an integrated, sustainable approach to surplus food management.
