A recent LinkedIn study reveals that nearly 60% of Gen Z professionals in the UAE aspire to secure green jobs—positions that contribute to environmental preservation.
Despite this strong interest, only 30% of these young professionals have a good awareness of the available green roles. Additionally, 63% of Gen Z believe green jobs are scarce in the labor market, and a mere 16% think there are sufficient training opportunities to help them acquire the necessary skills.
"Gen Z professionals are projected to represent over a quarter of the international labor force by 2025, so it is important that employers listen more closely to them,"
stated Ali Matar, growth markets leader for EMEA at LinkedIn.
Matar emphasized the importance of equipping Gen Z with the green skills needed to meet their environmental goals, a task that requires collective effort from labor market actors.
The study also highlighted that 72% of Gen Zs are concerned about the repercussions of climate change, with 56% reporting that it negatively impacts their mental health, a phenomenon known as "eco-anxiety." Over half of the respondents have already made changes to their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint, and 61% consider the environment in most of their daily decisions.
Interestingly, while Millennials lead the UAE's green workforce with 65% of green-skilled professionals, Gen Z is underrepresented, comprising only 15%. For Gen Zs aiming to enter green jobs, strengthening digital and STEM skills is recommended, as these skills can significantly enhance their chances of transitioning into the green job sector.
