The embassy of Ukraine in the UAE took to its official page on Facebook recently to confirm that Ukrainians within the country would be able to apply for a one-year residency permit to remain in the UAE.

“The Embassy of Ukraine in the UAE informs that, according to the message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE, citizens of Ukraine have been given the opportunity to apply for a permit to stay in the territory of the Emirates under a special procedure,”

said the statement.

It urged Ukrainians to contact Tasheel service centres in the country to avail of the facility. In 2018, the UAE adopted a resolution that permitted citizens of war-torn countries living in the UAE who have overstayed their visas to be allowed remain in the country for one year, provided they come forward, declare their illegal status and also apply for the special exemption residence permit.

The UAE reinstated the visa-free entry of all Ukrainian citizens arriving into the country from March 3.

To ease the situation arising from the Ukrainian crisis, last month, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordered two emergency humanitarian relief flights to support civilians fleeing Ukraine. The two flights transporting essential relief aid departed from Dubai and Sharjah airports, and its aid was intended to benefit around around 85,000 people.

The UAE also earlier in March announced $5m in humanitarian assistance to benefit civilians impacted by the situation in Ukraine. The contribution was committed to the United Nations’ Humanitarian Flash Appeal and the Regional Refugee Response Plan for Ukraine.
