World Green Economy Summit 2024 Highlights UAE’s Leadership in Global Sustainability and Climate Action

The 2024 World Green Economy Summit (WGES) concluded on Thursday, drawing wide participation from global leaders, government officials, and sustainability experts.

The event, held in Dubai, reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to promoting the green economy and addressing climate change.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA and Chairman of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO), expressed gratitude to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support of sustainability initiatives.

Al Tayer also thanked His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his patronage and for launching WGEO, which works in partnership with the UAE Government to drive global collaboration on green economy efforts.

Al Tayer emphasized the summit’s role in solidifying the UAE's leadership in sustainability, building on the outcomes of COP28, and preparing for COP29 in Azerbaijan.

"WGES has become a key platform for advancing the green economy globally,"

he noted.

Key discussions revolved around clean energy targets, with Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, announcing updated UAE Energy Strategy goals, including tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050.

Reem Al Hashimy, CEO of Expo City Dubai, highlighted Expo City's ongoing commitment to sustainable development, while Dr. Sultan Al Jaber underscored the economic opportunities of green transition. As the 10th edition closes, WGES continues to drive global action toward a more sustainable future.
