Dubai Municipality has begun work on Dubai Creek Lights, an AED80 million initiative that will illuminate eight kilometres of the historic waterway, weaving together heritage, architecture and culture into a striking after-dark experience.

Launched under directives from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the project spans six key areas along the Creek: Creek Quay, the Creek Promenade at the Gold Souq, the Infinity Bridge entrance, Al Shindagha Historic District, Bur Dubai Souq and Al Seef Marina. More than 5,000 lighting units will be installed, with the scheme visible from over 1,500 feet above ground.

The initiative arrives on the back of Dubai's naming as the World's Most Beautiful City at Night for 2026, and forms part of the municipality's broader push to enhance public spaces under the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.

Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the Creek has long been central to the emirate's growth, and that the lighting project would bring its heritage back to life while presenting it through a contemporary lens.

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency, added that the scheme uses advanced engineering tailored to each area's character, balancing visual appeal with pedestrian safety.

Sustainability is built into the design, with lighting solutions aimed at limiting disruption to marine life. Upgrades will also extend to promenades, building façades and waterfront walkways.

Once a guide for trading dhows navigating its banks, the Creek's lights will now serve a new purpose, drawing visitors and boosting tourism and commercial activity. The project is due for completion in the first quarter of 2027.
