The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced that, effective Tuesday, July 14, 2026, UAE nationals are permitted to renew their Emirates ID cards up to one year before they expire. This update doubles the previous renewal window of six months, providing citizens with much greater flexibility in managing their essential documents.
The initiative directly aligns with the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme by simplifying the customer journey, reducing procedural overlap, and leveraging advanced digital infrastructure. Crucially, this policy complements a previous decision that allows UAE citizens to renew their passports up to a year early. For nationals whose passport and Emirates ID expiry dates align, the ICP now enables both renewals to be completed within a single, integrated transaction, saving significant time and effort.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, highlighted that this forward-thinking shift is a response to citizens' evolving needs. By allowing individuals to complete these essential renewals at their convenience, the government is actively improving customer satisfaction and overall well-being. Additionally, the move bolsters the UAE’s position as a global leader in highly integrated, secure, and technologically advanced digital identity ecosystems.
