Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) commissioned 1,530 new 11 kV distribution substations across Dubai in 2024—a year-on-year increase of 8.2%—as part of its ongoing efforts to expand the Emirate’s energy infrastructure.
The construction and associated work were completed within 1,070,670 man-hours, all adhering to the highest health and safety standards.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated that the total number of medium voltage (11 kV and 6.6 kV) substations reached 45,317 by the end of 2024. He highlighted that the continued growth in distribution infrastructure reflects Dubai’s accelerating economic and urban expansion, and DEWA’s commitment to future-proofing the city’s energy needs.
“In line with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, DEWA is enhancing transmission and distribution networks based on electricity demand forecasts until 2030,”
Al Tayer said. He added that DEWA’s integration of advanced technologies has positioned it among global leaders in over 10 key performance indicators. Notably, line losses in electricity transmission and distribution were reduced to just 2.2%, compared to 6–7% in Europe and the US.
Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, noted that the authority leverages cutting-edge systems and collaborates with global partners to ensure reliable, sustainable power delivery. Automation, predictive maintenance, and reduced outage times are all central to DEWA’s strategy to meet rising demand and ensure consistent, high-quality service for all customers.
