DP World has joined forces with Brazilian railway operator Rumo to build a new terminal at the Port of Santos, to handle 12.5 million tonnes a year of grains and fertilisers, positioning the port as Brazil’s primary trade gateway and a key hub for South America.

Rumo anticipates investing BRL 2.5 billion (US$500 million) in a cutting-edge facility, financed through internal resources, loans, and potential partnerships. This supplements recent investments by DP World, expanding container handling capacity at Santos Port to 1.4 million TEUs and extending the quay to 1,300 meters. The new terminal, scheduled for completion in 30 months, will manage 9 million tonnes of grains and 3.5 million tonnes of fertilisers annually.

DP World will provide the terminal area under a 30-year agreement, reinforcing its status as Brazil's primary multipurpose port operator. This investment marks DP World's fourth in Brazil since 2013, coinciding with record cargo movements in January at Santos Port, handling 11.9 million tonnes, with bulk solids accounting for 5 million tonnes.

Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World Santos, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Rumo, emphasizing its transformative impact on Brazil's logistics sector. The new terminal aligns with DP World's commitment to growth and innovation, aiming to enhance trade capabilities and generate long-term value for customers and stakeholders.

As part of DP World's global decarbonization strategy, the terminal will feature advanced technology aimed at reducing consumption and emissions of polluting gases, with 21 new pieces of equipment slated for deployment. DP World's ongoing efforts in modernization and expansion at the Port of Santos include investments of US$35 million in 2023, with plans for further expansion on the horizon, underscoring its dedication to enhancing port operations and infrastructure.
