Dubai unveils new 10km hiking trail featuring wooden stairways at Mushrif Park
Picture yourself ascending a mountain trail, surrounded by lush greenery and traversing wooden stairways and bridges. Soon, this idyllic scene will become a reality in the heart of Dubai, within the safety of one of the city's oldest parks.
Dubai Municipality (DM) has recently unveiled a new hiking trail spanning nearly 10 kilometers at Mushrif Park. This trail is the first of its kind in Dubai and offers multiple paths suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. It consists of an 8.3-kilometer yellow recreational trail, designed for leisurely walks, and an additional 1.4-kilometer orange sports path, providing a secure environment for hikers to practice their skills.
Ahmed Al Zarooni, the Director of Public Parks and Recreational Facilities Department in Dubai Municipality, highlights the various features of the trail.
"It consists of various sculptures, wooden stairways and bridges, slopes and rest areas, which provide a comprehensive view of the landscape and wildlife in Mushrif Park,"
he explains.
The trail will be open to the public starting from June 20, and admission will be free. However, entry to Mushrif Park itself is subject to a fee, with a charge of Dh10 per car and Dh3 per person, as stated on the DM website.
Ensuring Hiker Safety
To ensure the safety of hikers, several guidelines have been established, including the availability of emergency communication methods, the importance of carrying an adequate water supply, and wearing appropriate clothing, footwear, and safety gear. Children between the ages of 12 and 15 are permitted to use the trails, provided they are accompanied by an adult.
Al Zarooni emphasizes the municipality's commitment to hiker safety.
"To ensure the well-being of hikers, administrative and supervisory staff will be stationed along the trail,"
he affirms.
"The Municipality has taken steps to provide all necessary amenities and services in the park, such as public restrooms, safety instructions, and signboards with directions."
Moreover, hikers are expected to adhere to trail etiquette and follow the instructions provided on the signboards, including giving way to cyclists, walking in the designated direction, and selecting the appropriate trail level. It is also recommended to perform warm-up exercises before hiking to minimize the risk of injury.
The Municipality stresses the prohibition of activities such as setting fires, cooking, smoking, camping, and overnight stays in the forest after completing the hike.
Mushrif Park
Mushrif Park, located on Al Khawaneej Street, is one of the oldest parks in the country, established in 1974. The park is popular among UAE residents, offering amenities such as cycling tracks, barbecue areas, and a covered swimming pool. It has undergone several developmental stages over the years, with attractions including the Al Thuraya Astronomy Center and the Mushrif Equestrian Club, which offer activities like horse riding, stargazing, and adventure trails.
In 2021, DM introduced cycling tracks in Mushrif Park, totaling 50 kilometers in length. These tracks are categorized into easy, moderate, and difficult courses, attracting both professional and recreational cyclists. The park also features pump tracks and skills areas for those interested in practicing tricks and preparing for more challenging rides.
