Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, has launched the world’s first triple-folding smartphone, the Mate XT, priced at a staggering $2,800—more than triple the cost of Apple's newly released iPhone 16. The unveiling took place at Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen, led by executive Richard Yu.

The Mate XT transforms into a 10.2-inch tablet and weighs 298 grams, making it a premium device with over four million registrations of interest before its launch. Huawei’s innovative phone will officially go on sale on September 20.

Yu emphasized the immense effort put into solving mass production and reliability issues during the product development phase. This advanced device features an AI assistant capable of text summary, translation, and photo editing, supported by Huawei’s in-house Kylin chips.

While analysts predict that production constraints and the hefty price tag will limit the phone’s market impact, the tri-fold device is seen as a symbol of Huawei's technological leadership.

Despite a smaller market presence compared to traditional smartphones, the foldable phone segment saw a 57% year-on-year growth in Q2, with 3.9 million units shipped, as Chinese brands expand into global markets.
