Emirates Health Services (EHS) has become the first health system in the world to achieve the international Healthcare Sustainability Certification, with all 17 of its hospitals covered by the recognition.

The certification was developed by Joint Commission International (JCI) in collaboration with the International Hospital Federation’s Geneva Sustainability Centre. It sets an international benchmark for how healthcare providers manage their environmental and operational impact.

Dr. Yousef Mohamed AlSerkal, Director-General of EHS, said the achievement reflects the priority that EHS and the UAE place on building a sustainable, resilient and future-ready healthcare sector.

He added that integrating environmental responsibility, health equity and effective governance into EHS operations turns national sustainability ambitions into measurable action. In his view, the approach supports the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and reinforces the organisation’s commitment to continuous improvement and international sustainability standards.

The milestone builds on EHS’s data-driven approach, innovation and service efficiency. It also supports the UAE’s wider sustainability agenda, the momentum generated by COP28 and the objectives of UAE Centennial 2071.
