The National University of Dubai (NUD) has appointed international higher education leader Victor Van der Chijs as its inaugural President, marking an important step in the establishment of Dubai’s new flagship research university.
Currently in its foundational phase, NUD is being developed as a research-focused institution designed to strengthen Dubai’s position in higher education, scientific research and innovation. The university will work closely with government, industry and international academic institutions to develop talent, generate knowledge and support emerging industries.
NUD’s development supports several of Dubai’s long-term strategies, including the Education 33 Strategy, Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and Dubai Social Agenda 33. The university aims to contribute to a diversified, knowledge-based economy while preparing graduates with skills relevant to future industries.
As President, Van der Chijs will lead NUD and its founding team through the university’s development phase. His responsibilities will include overseeing academic programmes, establishing international partnerships and creating a culture focused on research, innovation and academic excellence.
H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of NUD’s Board of Trustees, said Van der Chijs’ international leadership experience and ability to connect universities with government and the private sector will support the institution during its formative stage.
Van der Chijs brings more than three decades of experience spanning higher education, research, industry and economic development.
He served as President of the Executive Board of the University of Twente from 2013 to 2021, where he worked on strengthening research, entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer. He was also President of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities between 2015 and 2021.
His previous leadership roles include Chairman of Deltalinqs and President of the Board of BOM, a regional venture investor in the Netherlands. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions at OMA, Schiphol Group and ING.
His appointment will support NUD’s goal of becoming a globally connected research university focused on education, innovation and industry collaboration.
