The UAE has become a member of the International Science Council for the first time, with the Advanced Technology Research Council named as the country's national representative, marking a major step in its engagement with global scientific policy and collaboration.
The ISC is the world's largest independent, non-governmental body uniting more than 250 scientific organisations, including national academies, research councils and international scientific unions. Alongside the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, it co-convenes the Scientific and Technological Community Major Group at the United Nations, helping ensure scientific expertise shapes major global policy decisions, including progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The announcement coincides with Science Day 2026, a UN event co-organised by the ISC that brings together researchers, policymakers and international bodies to discuss science's role in tackling global challenges. It also aligns with the ISC's newly adopted 2025-2028 strategy, which prioritises science diplomacy, evidence-based policymaking and adapting research systems to emerging technologies.
Faisal Al Bannai, Secretary-General of ATRC, said the UAE's inclusion in the council reflects the growing importance of science and technology to economic resilience and international cooperation. ATRC will now coordinate engagement across the UAE's government, academic and industry sectors, ensuring the country speaks with a unified voice in international scientific forums.
Salvatore Aricò, CEO of the ISC, welcomed ATRC as the council's first member representing the UAE, calling it a reflection of the organisation's expanding global reach.
The move builds on the UAE's strong record in STEM development. Women make up 56 percent of the country's STEM graduates, well above the global average of 35 percent reported by UNESCO. ATRC's new role also complements its existing memberships in the Science and Technology in Society Forum and the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations, further strengthening the UAE's presence in global research and innovation dialogue.
