Behind every gleaming tower on the Dubai skyline stands a workforce that rarely makes the headlines, made up of people who leave home and family behind to build the city’s biggest ambitions under a relentless sun.
A Dubai-based non-profit has spent well over a decade making sure these workers are seen for their talent, their dreams and their potential, and its reach today runs into the millions.
Here is a closer look at how SmartLife Foundation approaches this work and what its next chapter could mean for the wider community.
What is SmartLife Foundation?
SmartLife is a Dubai-based, multiple award-winning NPO/NGO registered with the Community Development Authority of Dubai. Since 2009 it has reached more than 1 million semi-skilled and unskilled workers across the UAE, and its mission is to give them opportunities to learn, express and grow as individuals, professionals and entrepreneurs.
Every programme is completely free, and the organisation follows the law of the land while relying on volunteers, corporate partners and community supporters to keep its work going. The people it serves are mostly workers from South Asian and African countries, and SmartLife aims to help them take a step beyond routine and discover what they are capable of.

What SmartLife Offers Across Education, Health and Community
SmartLife organises its work into five broad areas, each with its own set of programmes and a reach that spans dozens of labour camps.
- Skills Development: Smart English, Smart Computer, Smart Skills and Smart Hands, which together have supported more than 5,000 beneficiaries across over 150 labour camps.
- Health and Well-Being: Medical check-ups, mental health support, fitness programmes and health awareness campaigns covering hygiene, nutrition and preventive care, reaching more than 10,000 beneficiaries.
- Community Support: Educational help for workers’ children, regular camp visits, recreational activities and financial literacy training, with more than 8,000 beneficiaries.
- Focused Groups: Targeted support through Smart Buddy, Smart Elder and Smart Woman, along with programmes for retired senior citizens and single parents living in Dubai, which has benefited more than 3,000 people.
- Annual Events: SmartLife Idol, sports tournaments, cultural celebrations and recognition ceremonies that bring more than 15,000 people together.
The common thread is a belief in teaching people how to fish rather than simply handing them the fish, with the goal of helping each person reach a point where they no longer need support.
Inside SmartLife Academy and Its Learning Tracks
Education sits at the centre of the organisation’s approach, and SmartLife Academy is where that belief becomes practical. It offers four learning tracks designed to build confidence, improve livelihoods and open new doors:
- Smart Skills: Hands-on training in trades such as mechanics, plumbing and electrical work, which strengthens employability.
- Smart Hands: Creative workshops in crochet, jewellery and fabric art that allow participants to earn through what they make.
- Smart English: Conversational English sessions every Sunday that build fluency and communication skills at work and beyond.
- Smart Computer: Weekly classes covering digital basics so participants can navigate technology for both work and personal life.
Each session is built to nurture independence, resilience and self-reliance, so that learning turns into lasting change rather than a one-time experience.

The SmartLife Mobile App Brings Support to Every Phone
To scale its impact beyond physical classrooms and camp visits, SmartLife has launched a free mobile app that works as a digital community hub for the workforce and its volunteers. It is built on three pillars, namely Access, Engagement and Empowerment, which let users explore programmes, stay connected through events and live interactions, and grow their skills through e-learning and certification.
The app has been designed around real-world needs, with a focus on simplicity and low data usage so that people with basic smartphones and limited internet can still take part. Workers and their families can also find eligibility details, programme dates, locations and registration information through SmartLife’s channels, including Instagram at SmartLifeOrg, with mobile-first content and multilingual support where useful.
Recognition and Alignment With the UN Sustainable Development Goals
SmartLife’s work has earned recognition from some of the region’s most respected award bodies. Its highlights include:
- Effie Awards 2015: Project AKSHAR by FP7 helped make SmartLife a leading CSR brand, ranking 2nd in the UAE, 3rd in the Middle East, 5th in the Middle East and Africa and 19th in the world.
- Dubai Lynx 2015: The promotional video for Project SAPNA WALL won 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze.
- Dubai Chamber CSR Label Community Award 2018
- Dubai Quality Appreciation Award 2019
- Ethraa Award 2024 and 2025: The Diamond Category in 2024 and the Gold Category in 2025.
The organisation also lines its initiatives up with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. This gives corporate partners a clear way to connect their own goals with measurable social progress, which matters at a time when 57% of UAE respondents say they want demonstrable impact from their philanthropic contributions.
How Volunteers and Companies Can Get Involved
SmartLife describes its next chapter as making its programmes easier to reach and giving more people a way to contribute. As SmartLife President Arun Krishan put it, the organisation wants the entire workforce, along with families, volunteers and partners, to “see themselves in that story”. Volunteers can offer their time and expertise through specific and realistic opportunities, and more than 20,000 have already been engaged. Companies and institutions can take part through sponsorships, partnerships and employee engagement initiatives, and over 200 corporate supporters have already done so. Organisations and professionals are also invited to share ideas and resources through ideation camps and project teams, where suggestions are tested, refined and built into SmartLife’s operations.
The work comes down to dignity, which means recognising the people behind the city’s growth for their own aspirations as well as their contribution. With more than 1 million lives touched and over 5,000 transformed, SmartLife shows how far a community can go when practical skills, care and opportunity are placed in the right hands.
