Smart cities are emerging as a cornerstone of sustainable economic growth and improved urban living, according to a new report from the World Governments Summit Organisation and Deloitte.

The study, titled "Smart Cities: Integrating Technology for Sustainable Urban Development," argues that cities merging technology with sustainable planning will be best equipped to handle climate pressures and rising public service demands.

The report positions urban sustainability as an urgent necessity rather than a distant goal. With populations expanding and climate risks mounting, cities are being urged to build integrated systems that combine advanced technology, resilient infrastructure, strong governance, and active citizen involvement.

Reem Baggash, Deputy Director of the World Governments Summit, said sustainable urban development has become a top priority for governments worldwide as rapid urbanisation and climate change reshape the future of cities. She noted that technology gives governments new ways to strengthen resilience, improve service delivery, and manage resources more efficiently.

Baggash added that cities balancing technology with sustainability goals will be more likely to attract investment, boost competitiveness, and enhance quality of life for residents.

The report outlines five priority areas, covering infrastructure modernisation, resource efficiency, citizen inclusion, climate resilience, and healthier urban environments. It highlights tools such as smart energy grids, intelligent transport networks, digital water systems, and city-scale digital twins as ways to improve services while cutting environmental impact.

It also addresses governance and financing challenges facing cities, stressing the need for digital public infrastructure, shared standards, and strong cybersecurity frameworks.

Looking ahead, the report points to artificial intelligence, next-generation connectivity, robotics, and predictive analytics as technologies set to redefine how cities operate and serve their populations in the years to come.
