The UAE and Ethiopia have expanded their landmark "5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative" to welcome seven million participants, adding two million new enrolments after the programme blew past its original target nearly two years ahead of schedule.
The decision reflects strong confidence in the initiative's results and its growing role in building digital skills among Ethiopian youth. It forms part of a broader strategic partnership between the two nations focused on government modernisation, digital capacity building and skills development.
As of June 2026, the programme had recorded 5,005,146 enrolments, comfortably surpassing the target set when it launched in July 2024. Officials from both countries say the milestone highlights the strength of their collaboration in expanding access to digital knowledge and preparing young people for future job markets.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the achievement as exceptional, noting it reflects his country's commitment to digital transformation and youth empowerment. He credited the overwhelming response from Ethiopian youth for prompting the expansion and thanked the UAE for its steadfast support throughout the process.
Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of Cabinet Affairs, said the partnership has delivered exceptional results under the direction of both nations' leadership. He added that scaling the initiative to seven million participants demonstrates how international cooperation can create meaningful impact for young people and future leaders.
Both officials emphasised that the programme goes beyond coding skills, aiming to build a foundation for an inclusive, knowledge-based digital economy. The expansion signals continued commitment from both governments to invest in human capital and equip the next generation with the tools needed to compete in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
