Dubai is cementing its status as a global sports economy powerhouse, with a structured strategy to nearly double the sector's contribution to GDP from AED10.17 billion to AED18.3 billion by 2033.
The emirate's Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 sets ambitious benchmarks: event attendance is targeted to grow from 1.67 million to over 4.1 million annually, while the number of major sporting events is set to rise by up to 250 percent over the coming years.
Sport has become a core pillar of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, fuelled by rapid growth in sports tourism, broadcasting rights, commercial sponsorship, content creation and the digital economy. Dubai currently hosts more than 400 local and international sporting events each year, alongside around 100 training camps for elite clubs and national teams.
Flagship events anchor the strategy's commercial returns. The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships continues to draw top-ranked players and generate wide regional and international media coverage. The Dubai Marathon attracts thousands of runners across nationalities each year, delivering measurable returns to the hospitality, aviation and retail sectors.
Dubai has also broadened its sporting portfolio in recent years to include international golf, mixed martial arts, cricket, cycling and marine sports. The launch of the Dubai Basketball project and its participation in the European ABA League further signals the emirate's intent to build a diversified sports investment ecosystem.
Esports is emerging as a high-growth segment, with the Dubai Esports and Games Festival reflecting the sector's growing contribution to the city's creative economy.
On the global stage, extensive international broadcast coverage of Dubai's events generates soft power returns, reaching hundreds of millions of viewers and reinforcing the city's identity as a world-class destination for sport, investment and tourism.
