Dubai Municipality has completed the Middle East's first pilot project for surveying waterways and canals using Mobile Mapping technology, marking a significant milestone in the emirate's push to build one of the world's most advanced geospatial ecosystems.
The project deployed the Leica TRK system mounted on a specially equipped vessel to survey Dubai Water Canal in Al Jaddaf. The operation captured highly detailed datasets and produced high-precision 3D models developed in collaboration with specialised partners.
The achievement is designed to deliver continuously updated spatial data that supports infrastructure management, asset tracking and sustainable urban planning across the emirate.
Eng. Maitha Alnuaimi, Director of the GIS Centre Department at Dubai Municipality, said the initiative is part of broader efforts to build an integrated geospatial database that feeds into Dubai's Digital Twin project.
"The project further reinforces Dubai's readiness and leadership as a smart and future-focused city while enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of urban management systems,"
she added.
Dubai Municipality said it will now expand surveying works to cover additional waterways across the emirate in coordination with relevant government entities, ahead of a wider operational rollout. The move is expected to accelerate the integration of smart systems into city management and strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure.
The pilot builds on Dubai's established position as a leader in geospatial innovation and reflects the emirate's ongoing investment in digital infrastructure as a foundation for long-term urban development.
