The UAE and Ireland have reinforced their international justice cooperation following the extradition of an Irish national accused of murder and involvement in organised crime.
The move, upheld by a decision from the Dubai Court of Cassation, marks a significant step in both nations’ shared commitment to upholding the rule of law.
On 31 May 2025, UAE Minister of Justice Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi and Irish Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan held a phone call to discuss the extradition and its wider implications. Both ministers emphasised the development as a clear demonstration of their countries' resolve to ensure that justice prevails across borders.
In a joint statement, they described the extradition as “further evidence of the excellent criminal justice cooperation” between the two governments. They stressed the importance of continued collaboration in ensuring that those who attempt to evade justice face prosecution.
The ministers also commended the efforts of Dubai Police and An Garda Síochána, highlighting the growing strength of police-to-police cooperation. They acknowledged the role of both forces in tackling the global threat of organised crime and pledged ongoing support for joint security initiatives.
The extradition followed the activation of bilateral agreements on extradition and mutual legal assistance between the UAE and Ireland, which officially entered into force on 18 May 2025 after the completion of all legal procedures.
