Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signalled a renewed push toward its clean energy targets, with MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer marking World Environment Day by outlining the authority's progress and long-term direction.
Al Tayer traced the UAE's environmental ethos back to its founding principles, noting that Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan placed the protection of natural resources at the centre of the nation's development framework. That legacy, he said, continues to shape national policy and positions the UAE as a global reference point for climate action.
At the operational level, DEWA's clean energy production now accounts for more than 21.5% of its total energy capacity — a milestone the authority attributes to its alignment with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both of which target 100% clean energy production by mid-century.
Al Tayer also pointed to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, as a guiding force behind DEWA's sustainability integration across its strategies, projects and initiatives.
On the significance of World Environment Day, Al Tayer described it as a timely platform to reinforce environmental responsibility, promote the sustainable use of natural resources and spotlight initiatives driving the green economy transition.
The statements reflect DEWA's broader positioning as a key institutional driver of Dubai's net zero ambitions, with clean and renewable energy projects continuing to scale as the emirate works to align its energy mix with its 2050 commitments.
