The UAE has retained its top position in the Middle East for electric vehicle sales, accounting for nearly half of all EV purchases across the region in 2025, according to the International Energy Agency's Global EV Outlook 2026 report.
The IEA report confirmed the UAE's dominance for the second consecutive year, underscoring its growing role as a regional benchmark for sustainable mobility. The country's share of roughly 50 percent of total regional EV sales reflects a market that has shifted considerably since the government began prioritising green transportation at a policy level.
Central to this progress is the National Electric Vehicles Policy, introduced by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in 2023. The policy targets accelerated EV adoption, expanded charging infrastructure, and increased investment in sustainable mobility, aligned with the UAE's broader ambitions around smart urban development and clean energy.
Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said the results reflect the country's success in building a competitive environment for electric vehicle manufacturers. He noted that advanced legislation and world-class infrastructure have supported the wider rollout of EVs across the local market.
The achievement ties into several national frameworks, including the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The Ministry is also advancing the development of an integrated nationwide charging network through the UAEV platform, which aims to strengthen infrastructure readiness ahead of anticipated growth in EV demand.
Al Olama added that the Ministry continues to work with public and private sector partners to drive investment and innovation in green mobility, positioning the UAE as a long-term hub for clean transportation technologies.
